The ‘Resolve now’ dialog enables you to view the reasons for validation failure.

Slightly limiting Windows features

The effects of not passing the Genuine Advantage test are uncomfortable, to say the least. One of the following consequences (more than often, all of them) will occur: the lower section of the desktop is covered in notifications, a desktop dialog reminding you to take actions constantly appears and / or the desktop background changes to black (the wallpaper can be reset, but every 60 minutes it turns black).

In order to prevent unpleasant notifications, you should purchase your Windows license from Microsoft only and activate it properly. If your license was obtained from sources that are not trustworthy, chances are your copy will not pass the validation test.

I have an HP m8010y quad core computer I bought in 2007 with Windows Vista. A few years ago I upgraded to Window 7 Ultimate from which I still have the original disks and product key. A couple of weeks ago I got the message that Windows was Not Legal. I tried to use the Windows Genuine Advantage validation too and got the message Files that Windows needs to work properly have been modified, removed, or disabled. To resolve, you need to install genuine Windows. Not to worry, we can help you with that

I was also unable to run Windows Update and could no longer download files. I was able to download the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool on a separate machine and copy it to this machine. The output from that tool is below. I tried entering my product key from Windows 7 Ultimate and it didn't work. I was able to enter the Windows Vista key on my computer case, and it seemed to take it, but it locked up saying it was configuring components and would shut down when finished.. I rebooted and the computer still will not let me run Windows Update nor download new files or drivers, but I haven't seen the 'Windows Not Legal' warning in a couple of days. It there a way to Windows Validation tool working, get Windows Update working again, and get the computer so it will download files in IE11?
